Buttwhackers

Buttwhackers is a company that fillets fish for recreational, commercial, and tourist fishing boats in the harbor of Homer, Alaska. To paraphrase Buttwhackers, in the late 80’s the slang term for fish filleters in the area began to be known as “whackers” and the shorthand for a halibut fish was known as a ‘butt. Combining these two colloquialisms, Buttwhackers was born. Given the humorous name for their company and their close relationship with the tourist fishing market, Buttwhackers sell a good deal of apparel each fishing season. I created a shirt design as well as a potential logo direction for the company. In drawing up a design for the company I decided to approach the project with a “rough-yet-refined” style, to make a nod to the historic nature of fishing in Alaska, while also noting the tongue-in-cheek name of the company.
